Call for Papers

2017 The Seventh International Conference on Translation and Cross-Cultural Studies

Topic: Stories of Heroes

In the myths of every ethnicity, there exists an archetype of “Heroes:” The Story of Moses in the Bible, the Legend of the Holy Grail in England, the folk hero Alyosha Popovich of Russia, the Chinese folktale Houyi Shooting the Suns…etc. Such stories have reflected the crisis and the situation of losing a certain value society was facing. The  hero/heroine  must  leave  the  comfortable  and  familiar  maternal  cocoon  and embark on a brave journey to overcome the obstacles and challenges. He/She must slay the fearful evil dragon in his/her heart, take back the treasure and return to the mundane world to save his/her people.

American mythologist Joseph Campbell proposed in his book The Hero with A Thousand Faces that no matter how different our background and personalities are, to become  a “hero” who  successfully conquers  his/her fate,  one must  experience a “process of individualization,” which is a heroic journey of “DepartureàInitiationàReturn.” The hero leaves the world he/she is familiar with, enters a supernatural land of fantasy, encounters an appalling opposing force, and gains a decisive victory. After the hero returns from his/her mysterious expedition, he/she brings blessings to his/her people. Such identical pattern of “heroic journey” is referred as “the monomyth.”

Psychologically, the trial of a heroic journey is one of the important phases in life. Without giving up oneself and paying the price, harvest cannot be gained. When we are no longer protective to and thinking for only ourselves, we are experiencing an authentic heroic transformation consciously.
