Call for Papers

Our Female Future

Deadline for Submissions: December 31, 2018

The year 2017 began with the largest civil demonstration America has ever seen, as more than a million women and their supporters took to the streets in Women’s Marches throughout the country and around the world, including in Taiwan. Initially a protest against the inauguration of Donald Trump, who lost the popular vote for president by millions to the first female candidate of a major party, this activist moment fueled by female fury continued strong throughout the year, with wave after wave of #MeToo revelations about abuse of power and sexual harassment by prominent men in entertainment, government, education and industry. As TIME magazine chose as their 2017 Person of the Year the Silence Breakers—those women speaking out about harassment—public support for #TimesUp has built around the world, and the US now has unprecedented numbers of women standing for office in upcoming elections.

OUR FEMALE FUTURE, a special issue of Concentric, seeks to contribute to the ongoing global conversation surrounding women’s voices and issues of empowerment in memoir, fiction and other genres. Of particular interest are papers addressing the globalization of the #MeToo movement, specifically in Asia; the influence of storytelling as an impetus for social and personal change; the role of writing in emotional recovery from sexual trauma; feminist utopias and scifi futures; memoir as a genre of healing and resistance; writing social justice and protest; sexual harassment and assault in literature; the representation of women in comics and in film; the sexualization of girls in media; the intersection of feminist theory and praxis; normalization of sexual misconduct; and a reframing of gendered stereotypes.
